One of the most difficult projects which our office was invited to carry-on was the unload ex ship, clearance in port, inland transport and storage in "Ergaose" premises, (the affiliate company of Hellenic Railway Organization), of approximately 30.000 tons steel rails, 36 meters long each, in lots of 5.000 tons monthly for the new railway line from Athens to Peloponnese.
The challenge was great, especially at the part of the inland transport, because never in the past were dispatched such lengthy rails into Greece.
The tender defined as storage area for the major quantity, the new railway depot of "Ergaose" north in Thriasion plant and since origin of rails was Italian and sea transport had to be involved, the nearest port of call for the vessels should be Eleusis.
Based on the above we had to search for special telescopic trailers of 35 meters length, capable to carry these rails through the narrow passes of Eleusis
However, such trailers were not available in Greece, so through two good transport companies in Piraeus we searched the European market and ordered 6 trailers from the Netherlands.
In this way we had very fast in our possession 6 trailers with average length of 35 meters each, able to carry safely the rails, supporting them at least every 2,5-3 meters. In addition our office had to issue several licenses in the Ministry of Transport and Traffic Police and to examine the technical specifications for the transportation from the port up to the storage area. Also to arrange an economical an competitive offer covering the cost of the project with two years foresight and arrange the final storage based on approved specifications and detailed schedule.
With hard efforts and high professionalism from all the involved parties, a big success was resulted, furnishing a small assistance from our part to our country to acquire a modern railway network.
